Q&A With Team Priime: Fave Styles, Cameras, And More!

A little while back, we asked some of our favorite IGers to tell us about their go-to photo editing apps. One that got a lot of love was Priime!

The Priime team is based right by our HQ in San Francisco, so we decided to pop by their office for a visit.

Take a look as we go behind the scenes and chat with them about how they’re taking photo styles to the next level.

So What Is Priime?

beforeTo put it simply, it’s an editing app with styles instead of “filters”. These styles are designed by professional photogs (affectionately named Style Authors) including some of our faves like Kim Thomas, Michael O’Neal, and more.

Priime analyses your shot and suggests a style for it. Or, you can just choose any style that strikes your fancy!

How Did It Start?

beforeWhen Art Chang (professional photographer and co-founder of Priime) posted his beautiful phone photos to his Instagram, he noticed he was using tons of different apps to edit his pics just right.

beforeArt and his close friends/former colleagues Andrew, Joe, and Loren got together and realized just how much they had in common: a love for photography, and community, plus technical skills as designers and developers.

So they built the app of their dreams and rallied the photography community to perfect the editing process along with them.

Now, let’s meet the team!

Arthur Chang

beforeQ. What do you do at Priime?

A. CEO. I code, write emails, take a lot of photos, hang out with photographers, and do any odd job needed to keep the company successful.

Q. Favorite Priime style?

A. The Tamalpais style! It’s one of the styles I designed from my own photography because it’s exactly how I edit my photos.

Q. Favorite camera/iPhone accessory?

A. The Studio Neat Glif that I bought from Photojojo. It allows me to make “long” exposures with my phone, so I can get a lot of movement from landscapes like fog.

Andrew Ng

beforeQ. What do you do at Priime?

A. I work on the Priime iPhone app mainly, and everything else when needed. I also try to keep our air plants alive in the office.

Q. Favorite Priime style?

A. Cathedral by Jessica Zollman. It works well on clean and bright shots while preserving skin tones.

Q. Favorite camera/iPhone accessory?

A. PocketWizard Plus II, never missed a single shot with it after 10+ years.

Joe Pestro

beforeQ. What do you do at Priime?

A. I code Priime for iPhone and Priime.com.

Q. Favorite Priime style?

A. Americana by Thomas Hawk. It makes blues look amazing, and I’m a big fan of Thomas Hawk’s photography.

Q. Favorite camera/iPhone accessory?

A. I shoot a lot with the iPhone 6 camera. For DSLR shooting, I have a Manfrotto MTPIXI-B PIXI Mini Tripod bolted on to the bottom. It’s compact and perfect for throwing into a bag.

Loren Baxter

beforeQ. What do you do at Priime?

A. I provide creative direction and design the app, from brand to UI to styles. I also build our website.

Q. Favorite Priime style?

A. Cathedral. It was the first style we made and I spent way too many hours working to get it just right. It’s perfect for capturing washed out, white, minimal interior shots

Q. Favorite camera/iPhone accessory?

A. My first camera, which was an M&M brand film camera. It looked like a big yellow M&M. A friend gave it to me for my 10th birthday and that’s when I started taking my first photos. It holds a special place in my heart.

Adrienne Young

beforeQ. What do you do at Priime?

A. I plan photowalks and events for the Priime community, run all things social media and content, and keep sour belts at my desk.

Q. Favorite Priime style?

A. Minimal by Everlane . It’s a clean style and has been one of my favorites since we launched it in our recent collaboration with Everlane.

Q. Favorite camera/iPhone accessory?

A. I travel often so lightweight gear is a must. I love the Gorillapod and bring it along with me for all of my adventures.
