According to to the photo-sharing site’s public data, the iPhone just surpassed all other cameras to be the most used camera on Flickr.
There is a minor caveat, of course: every iPhone (whether 2G, 3G, or 3G S) identifies itself simply as an “iPhone”, no model number. Unlike other camera models, which carry their own unique model string in photo EXIF data.
Still, it’s a pretty telling statistic.
Now that many of our phones have cameras that take photos that really are good enough for most situations, and our capacity to take photos (without worry for film cost or memory space) is nearly limitless, expect our usage of photography to continue to shift in this direction — from dedicated cameras to always-present devices. From special occasions, to everyday documentation.
You heard it here first! Getty and Flickr have just entered into an exclusive partnership to sell Flickr images.
Here’s how it’ll work:
Getty editors will scour Flickr for images they deem saleable
They’ll contact photographers whose images are selected to see if they want to make them available for licensing by Getty Images
Assuming the photographer says yes, the images become available through Getty’s Flickr collection, and accessible to all their existing customers in the image licensing space
It remains to be seen how many images Getty will select, what deal they’ll offer photographers, and how they’ll select images. But people have been wondering what impact Flickr would have on the stock photography space for years, and this is a pretty interesting deal!
Here’s how it goes: Stop people by the street, talk with them, ask if you can take a portrait. Post the picture to Flickr and 100 strangers pool. Try to get an idea who they are. Write a caption that tells something about the person in portrait. Describe how you got the photo. Don’t post archive photos. Get out on the streets to take new ones.
So if you’ve made set “Taking more pictures of strangers” as a 2008 photo resolution then this is the challenge for you.
Now he can can easily added location information to this EXIF data and place his images in the Flickr Map. Would come in pretty handy during today’s 24 Hours of Flickr!
You could also add those photos to the Photojojo group map. Check it out, you’ll find some amazing photos to explore.
According to Chris, the adaptor seems to work for any Nikon that would work with the MC-35 adaptor. Now anyone have something for a Canon?
Add a note to a friend’s photo on flickr with the text “ho ho ho hat” or “ho ho ho beard” to add a santa hat or santa beard (respectively) to the photo instantly.
An early holiday friends from our friends at Flickr!
As much as I like Captain Jack Sparrow as my background, I thought it would be fun to see what Send Me A Pic, a handy Web-to-Mobile picture exchange, could do. You can search Flickr images and create a customized image for almost any mobile phone*. I had success with my Sprint service.
You will need to have web access on your phone in order to download the image.
*According to the site, currently only Sprint and Cingular networks have been tested. Verizon phones will receive the text message but the phones seem to disallow you to save it as a wall paper.
Here’s one for you Flickr fans, the Flickrstr Famr keeps a running log of the most popular users on Flickr, both all-time and by the week. Like high school wasn’t bad enough!
Our pal Heather Champ just posted about an upcoming Flickr photo exhibition in New York City.
It’s a great opportunity to get noticed for your favorite shots.
Enter by June 26th by submitting one photograph to The Blink of an Eye Flickr Group. A panel will pick the best five and they’ll be shown off at the show. It only takes a second to submit a photo!
There be changes afoot at our beloved Flickr! Starting next week, look forward to new navigation, improved search, and a faster (yes!) Organizr.
Full details below:
New Navigation
We’ve rationalized the site’s navigation, cleaned it up and (hopefully) made it much easier for both new users and experienced users. The new system breaks down into: You, Your Contacts, Your Groups & The World (aka Explore).
Aside from that, there are some other large changes in the new release:
New Search
Search has been greatly improved (with full booleans and multiple tags, you’ll be AND, OR, NOT and +ing and -ing your heart out), We’ve also added a search box to the top of every page and redesigned the results pages, so you can search for anything from anywhere.
New and Improved Organizr
We’ve given the Organizr a complete overhaul, aiming for maximum speed, more flexibility in searching and browsing while making your workspace bigger.
Person Menu
The pink balloon? Popped! Now you can mouse over anyone’s buddy icon and get a useful menu which lets you jump directly to their photos, profile, favorites and more.
More Photos
In our continuing efforts to show you the millions of photos on Flickr, we’ve bumped up the number of photos you can see on most pages around the site. (And, when you’re searching, you can toggle between seeing thumbnails or a larger version of each photo with some extra information.)
