Team Photojojo welcomes a new Season

newborn

My name is Season Moore, and I’m a contemporary children’s photographer in Raleigh, NC. I am also a wife and the mom of two young kids. I love what I do, and I’m glad to have the chance to share a little bit of that with you as a new contributor to Photojojo Uncut.

But I’m not here to get into the nitty-gritty basics of photography — I’ll be focusing on topics of interest to the moms and dads out there in PhotojojoLand. I’ll give you some behind-the-scenes info on my own work (OK, so there might be a little nitty-gritty talk) and share my tips for working with babies and kids, and I’ll also introduce you to some of my favorite photographers.

The photo above, taken with a Nikon D200, was the final shot from my latest session. I’m a natural-light photographer, so every indoor image is taken using light from a nearby window. In this case we were directly facing a set of windows about five feet away. At nearly two weeks old, this little guy was one of my older newborns. The younger infants – most of my newborn subjects are less than a week old – are sleepier, and you can move into position without disturbing them. As they days go by they get more alert, and it’s harder to get that precious scrunched-up newborn look.

Now, as much as I like to talk – just ask my husband! – I may run out of things to say. So I need to hear from you! Drop in to the Photojojo Forums with specific questions you might have, products you’d like to share or topics you’d like to discuss. If you see a particular photo on my site that you’d like more information on, please let me know. I’d also love to see your photos and the fun things you’ve done with them. So please share!

Glad to learn about this site and find you here. You said you wanted questions...

    1. How do you ensure that the color & brightness of a photo on the 'puter match what will be printed (not printed at home)?

    2. How can I find a professional quality printing business to print my photos?
  • Hi Season. I loved loved loved my newborn session with you so much that shortly after my bought me a nice digital SLR for me to play around with while the kiddos are still small (many many brownie points there!). I have the standard consumer level Nikon D40 with an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens, with maximum aperture ranges of about 3.5-5.6. I love the effect of a wide open aperture when photographing little ones, especially when you can focus on little toes or hands and have the rest of the subject fade out. Here's my question. Having a consumer level digital slr, is there any point in me investing in a lens that I can set at its minimum throughout the range of the lens? (does that make sense - something I can set at say 2.8 throughout?). Or is my more basic camera not going to give me the quality that would make it worth having a lens like that? Any thoughts would be much appreciated!
  • I am so excited to see that you use a Nikon D200 since I bought one this week!! In this world of Canon's it can feel impossible to compete! I just love your work and would love to be able to do so well someday. Currently it it just a hobby for me that makes enough $$ to cover the costs of the hobby. My husband is deployed and I have 6 children under the age of 10, so there is not too much time for a business, but that is o.k., because I have so much to learn first! I have a couple of questions for you if you do not mind.

What is the lens you use most often?

Do you take your pictures in srgb or Adobe rgb?

Do you run actions on your pictures afterwards?

Thank you for opening this up to questions, I would love to hear your answers. Again, wonderful work, I loved all of your pictures you have quite a talent!!

    Season,

Love your work. I love to take candid pictures of kids, especially my grandkids. My question is sometimes I need to pose the kids how do you learn to pose?
