Thanks again everyone. Leeanhtro, I have a Nikon D70s dSLR and in that shot I was using my 50mm f/1.8 lens. The camera was set to Aperture priority and I selected a wide aperture in order to make the depth of field more shallow, blurring the background. I use Aperture priority a lot, but I am trying to venture out into the manual realm more often . My best advice for photographing young children and pets, who both move often and unexpectedly, is use a fast lens (one with a larger aperture) and take A LOT of shots.

I would love some tips for getting pictures of fast children. I think my photos have suffered because I don’t have time to compose or do any manual adjustments before snapping a picture of my 3-year-old or 5-month-old.

How were you able to get such good depth of field in that photo? Portrait mode?
