Greetings from a Mom With a Camera…

Hi, my name is Kari and I am a Mom with a Camera (MWAC). While some may consider the phrase pejorative I consider it to be descriptive. I’m an amateur photographer with a dSLR doing my best to learn the art and science of photography and digital darkroom processing. I am also the mother of a 3 year old boy who is my most frequent photographic subject.

I’ve been reading Photojojo for quite a while and I am looking forward to bringing one MWAC’s perspective to Photojojo Uncut. Nice to meet you!

  • Hi Kari!

Beautiful kid there, by the way.... I'm sure we'll see much more of him. It'll be wonderful to see your perspective on photography, too!

he's a doll! i've been an unofficial MWAC for 26 years and 5 kids. my husband says when they were born they learned to recognize my face, my boobs, and my lens- but not neccessarily in that order. looking forward to your shots!
  • Well, that picture looks pretty good to me, so I think you're doing a fantastic job learning. Can't wait to see and read some more of your stuff. Welcome!
  • Hi Kari, nice to see another MWAC. i too have a DSLR and a 3 yr old son (and a 9 month old one too!)
Can't wait to see all of your nice photos!
  • Angie
You have a beautiful child for the subject of your picture. The red hair and yellow shirt bring him out very well. The lines of his shirt and the edges of the wooden fence also work well. Good luck with everything.

Hi Kari! Nice to see a MWAC on here, as I'm *kind of* a MWAC too- well, I've been doing photography longer than I've had kids, but I'm not exactly pro either... though I'm not sure when exactly I'd consider myself pro- lol. I'm always learning.
Anyway- nice to "meet" you and I look forward to hearing some of your POV's and ideas.
  • Hey Kari (",)

Welcome to Photojojo Uncut. That is a really nice shot of your adorable son; I can't wait to see the rest of your photos.
  • Kari
Thank you for the warm welcomes, and the compliments on my photographic subject ;) . Glad to know there are lots of MWAC readers too! :)
  • Yay, welcome!
  • Melanie
Hello! Nice to meet you & your phtography! No dSLR yet, just a Canon A640 with extra lenses & filters. Are you familiar with Flickr.com? Come check it out.My photos are under ...msamaclean. Lots of great photos, friends & tips from all over the Earth! Peace! (Isn't Photojojo fun!?!)
  • Hi and welcome. Great shot of your son and I look forward to reading of your adventures with kid and camera.
  • MWAC - I like it! Looking forward to tips and ideas that I (as a fellow MWAC) can really use! :)
  • I would love some tips for getting pictures of fast children. I think my photos have suffered because I don't have time to compose or do any manual adjustments before snapping a picture of my 3-year-old or 5-month-old.

How were you able to get such good depth of field in that photo? Portrait mode?

    Looking forward to your tips!
  • Kari
Thanks again everyone. Leeanhtro, I have a Nikon D70s dSLR and in that shot I was using my 50mm f/1.8 lens. The camera was set to Aperture priority and I selected a wide aperture in order to make the depth of field more shallow, blurring the background. I use Aperture priority a lot, but I am trying to venture out into the manual realm more often :) . My best advice for photographing young children and pets, who both move often and unexpectedly, is use a fast lens (one with a larger aperture) and take A LOT of shots.
