Gift cards your way

The argument against giftcards in my house is they are too impersonal. But with Cardways we don’t need to worry about that anymore. Customize your giftcard with your favorite picture and you’re ready to go. The whole thing takes a few minutes and you can have your gift card sent, along with a greeting card, directly to your giftee’s mailbox.

Thanks to reader Todd McClamroch who sent this our way. Todd recently put together a photo promotion for Cardways.

Where to find photobooths in the US and abroad

superman_still.jpg

Reader Joy Rose asks:

I loved Raul’s photo booth time capsule. Do you know how to find out where photo booths are located in the U.S.?
Thanks,
Joy

Good question, Joy! It just so happens a friend of ours, Brian Meacham, is something of an expert on the subject. Check out his Worldwide photobooth locator (and contribute your own) and his photobooth blog at Photobooth.net!

Our Readers Respond: Ways to send something to yourself in the future

In our last newsletter, we suggested a photo project where you created an ongoing photo time capsule by hiding photos and instructions for yourself in the future.

We also asked if anyone knew of ways to reliably send something to yourself in the future. Here’s what you said:

Mahima wrote in…

  • Regular mail. With the number of things on the average persons mind, this will probably be forgotten by the time it gets to you.
  • Go a step further and give it to a friend to keep and mail at a random date without telling you.

  • Gabe Grote offered:

Open a safety deposit box. Put items in box. Leave detailed instructions at bank to close box on certain date. They will open it/and or contact you when it expires. You will then get it mailed to you by the bank or they will contact you regarding how to pick it up. Pay in advance (If you have the cash.)

    Finally,

  • Reader Bruce Eliot was reminded of our friend Noah Kalina’s excellent self-portraits over time photo/video project.
  • Reader Robin Spoerl was reminded of the Diego Goldberg’s excellent family portrait project which we wrote about here about a year ago!

  • Tubes to your Mother

    Tubes. Connect Instantly.
For Mother’s Day I plan on transforming my mom’s computer from the most expensive solitaire game I’ve ever seen into OurFamily Channel by installing Tubes for her.

Tubes beta is free, but the software is Windows only right now (unless you run Parallels on your Mac). You get 2 GB of disk space and can invite as many people as you’d like to share your tubes. Invite the entire family and then everyone can share their photos by dropping pictures on the Tube.

The best part is I can fix the pictures on my end and everyone else’s pictures are fixed too!

    ShutterClock

Did you love the idea of 24 hours of Flickr but didn’t know about it until it was over? Or did you participate and it’s left you wanting for more chrono-based photography?

Fret not, ShutterClock is going to do its part to help you out on May 11.

ShutterClock has several ways to participate but all let you share images taken at the same time in different geographic locations. I heart these types of projects because they give you a quick, achievable photography goal that can kickstart better photography habits. Check it out and join in!

Thanks to Photojojo reader/ShutterClock creator Ronan for letting us know about his project. Got your own project, let us know!

DIY GPS adaptor for Nikon DSLRs

    483624273_f6381cfe38_m.jpg

A hearty salute to those brave enough to solder!

Flickr group member Chris isn’t afraid of a circut board and he’s created a great DIY GPS adaptor for his Nikon.

Now he can can easily added location information to this EXIF data and place his images in the Flickr Map. Would come in pretty handy during today’s 24 Hours of Flickr!

You could also add those photos to the Photojojo group map. Check it out, you’ll find some amazing photos to explore.

According to Chris, the adaptor seems to work for any Nikon that would work with the MC-35 adaptor. Now anyone have something for a Canon?

    A Photojojo Mother’s Day 2007

mothersday-tattoo.jpgWe all know there’s nothing she’d like more than a schmaltzy card and a macaroni necklace.* But we also know that there’s no one who loves you like your mama, so let’s put a bit more effort into it this year, Chief.

Show your mom some love with a little something from our Mother’s Day gift guide. For bonus points, have your gifts shipped to Miraval and send Mom to pick them up. (You may want to let her stay for a few days, too.)

*This is not true, no matter how many times your mother tells you it is.

    mothersday-trapeze.jpg SHOW OFF

    • After she polishes off the yummy treats inside Harry and David’s Chocolate Truffle Photo Box, she’ll have the perfect place to stash all of those snapshots of you in your Wonder Woman Underoos.
    • Our very own Magnetic Photo Rope makes it easy for Mama to trade out her favorite pics whenever she’d like.
    • Give her a sleek new way to put your more wall-appropriate photos on display with a Trapeze Frame from Chiasso.
    • Make sure she’s thinking of you at all hours with a personalized carved nightlight from Light Affection.
    • Turn Mom’s living room into a gallery space with some seriously cool personalized artwork by Trunk’t Gallery or Me Art.

    CARRY THAT WEIGHT!

The “mom bag” is a serious piece of equipment. Make sure your mom has everything she needs on hand with a clutch (also available here) or, for the mom with more to haul, a big ol’ tote (also available here.)

    LEISURE TIME

    DIY LOVE

    mothersday-macaroni.jpg

    • A set of marble magnets will mean Mama’s thinking of you whenever she wants a snack.
    • Help Mom remember her ABCs with an alphabet photo album made with her favorite things in mind.
    • Appeal to her sweet tooth with a dozen cupcakes featuring the fam.
    • Light up her life with a set of Martha-rific photo lanterns.
    • And of course, there’s always that macaroni necklace.

Fore + Back Photo Contest at Coudal Partners

If you need a challenge to complete by Thursday (May 3), may I offer you the Fore + Back Photo Contest over at Coudal Partners (a design, advertising and interactive studio in Chicago). Info about the contest from their site:

Take a picture in which something in the foreground is related to something in the background. Simple enough. Perhaps the two things together create some sort of story or joke or dramatic tension. Maybe a traffic sign that says “merge” is in the foreground with a couple kissing in the background or perhaps something else entirely. The contest is wide-open for your interpretation.

Be sure to read the rest of the entry details, but hurry.

If they get some great entries they plan on using them on their front page. And if that is not enough for you, just imagine what you can make with the first prize, their Super Jewel Box Packaging System.
