postcrossing -- anyone do it?
I've been intrigued by the postcrossing ad on this site for a while. I haven't done it myself, as I'm a serious procrastinator, but it does seem like fun. I'm wondering if anyone else has done it and what your experience has been. Do you use your own photos for it?

I liked the idea, too. But, I am also a procrastinator. (Procrastinators Unite! Tomorrow!) That, and it seems like a lot of work (okay, not really a lot. But more than I'm willing to commit time.) I think they are real postcards, not photos. And I think you are supposed to scan them to be viewed on the site. And there are special codes to track them. I dunno. I was gonna read on, but realized it wasn't going to happen for me.
I do want to forward this info to my brother, though. He's a 2nd grade teacher in Compton. I think his students might get a kick out of a project like this. Maybe they'll even find it a little inspiring.

When postcrossing first started I signed up - sent a few postcards and got a bunch too. It's really fun to do but it can be time consuming sometimes. For example when I first started I had the hardest time finding postcards. I went to about 10 stores looking before I just took a little longer of a drive to a more touristy type location. It can get a little expensive too - if you're sending a lot of cards out. I can't remember what it cost per postcard when I started but now it's like $0.98 to mail a postcard internationally.
But, and here's the fun thing, a few of the 'postcards' that I received were just some printed photos that people took around their town. The shots weren't always what you might think of as postcard quality but I enjoyed these the most. It's like having a friend mail you a picture from a vacation or something.

If I 'make' my own cards it would just be me printing out a few pictures I've taken - but I'll post them if I do.  And yes, the due date is Oct 30th so any day now ... which means it may be a while before I can really get back into postcrossing - or even photojojo!!

Ankou, it was actually having babies that got me hooked on the internet. My babies needed lots of holding. I'd sit at the computer for hours and nurse them or rock them or bounce them. I felt kind of isolated when they were babies (despite living in Manhattan, LOL -- I just didn't know a lot of people in my situation at the time), so the internet was a great place to get support. So there's a possibility we'll actually be seeing more of you.

I tried Postcrossing, it was fun. At first I bought postcards but then later I made some with my own pictures. I was really surprised at how well it worked. I am more of a collector of postcards from places I have been though. If I knew I could always get postcards that someone made with their own pictures then I would do it again.

Our local library showcased a whole bunch of vintage postcards. I wanted to get a bunch of photos of them but they were already replaced with another showcase. Being in advertising I've always enjoyed the promotional materials from the 40s, 50s and 60s and these were from the mid 40s.

Will, I tried Jalbum a few years ago, when I didn't really have anything to show, and I liked it. I just have to get my lazy self going and try it again. I think it makes more sense for me personally than wix.com.

When I first joined, it was hard finding time to stay involved, but here's what really saves me a ton of time: I go to the drugstore and buy a big stack of postcards (like 50-75) at a time as well as a bunch of stamps from the Post Office. Buying it all at once lasts me a quite while. That way, when I want to request an address I already have everything I need to mail one. (Otherwise, it would take me forever to find time to go buy a postcard and stamp one or two at a time.)
I just grab a postcard from the stack, affix a stamp, write the recipient's address on it, and throw the blank, but otherwise ready-to-mail, card in my bag for a spare moment during lunch, on the train, etc. to write a simple message quickly.
It only takes a few minutes and it's really cool to get interesting postcards from all over. I often chat with other Postcrossers who are quite friendly and who sometimes offer for me to stop by their town if I am ever in their country...

Does anyone know of something like postcrossing, only for photos? Maybe we should start one. I would love to get 4x6 photos of another person's locality in the mail, and I think I could actually push past my laziness to do it myself!

Oh I am a postcrosser too! And I just love it! And really, sending pictures as postcards I do, and receive some too! As for postcards well, I guess I'm just lucky... I have a friend working in a printing place, so I just send him my pictures and he prints them as postcards for me.
And Aguayo is right... buy lots of postcards, and lots of stamps, and then it's quite fast and easy to participate

I'm a postcrosser, too, and like it very much. I only request addresses when I already have cards, stamps and everything at hand, though because I get tied up in work, Kung Fu and UWRugby so much I forget things...
I'd be up for the photo swap, too, superd. I really like that idea, and I think I'd love going out and taking pictures about town just for that kind of thing.

Any thoughts on how we might organize a photo swap? I'm willing to do some work, but I now that those travelling notebooks generated a HUGE amount of interest, and I'm not sure I want to go there. But then again, maybe that would be exciting. If anyone has ideas on how to set something like this up and also wants to help, e-mail me (through my profile), and we'll see what we can do.
