Bad Compact

I just experienced my first "disc error" today. I bought the SanDisk Ultra II CompactFlash (4GB). It was $39.99 at Ritz Camera. Of course yesterday I saw the same disk for $24.99 in RadioShack (right across the lot from Ritz)!! Anyways, I was taking photos and everything seemed great. I could see the photos taken on my little Canon RebelXT screen, etc... I took the disc out and put it in my printer slot like I always do and iPhoto just kept spinning its loading wheel endlessly. "HMM!" I said and tried loading it from my Digital Concepts CompactFlash Reader/Writer instead and again iPhoto endlessly spins away. Seeing this I try importing them straight from my camera's cable. Nadda, nothin', negative... Now I'm a bit heated and try taking a photo with the disc still in the camera and "disk error" flashes on my camera panel. Is there a reason why? (Yes, I know its technology – there doesn't need to be a reason why) Is there a way to fix this. I've used this disc for a whopping 5 weeks.

4 gig SDs are about $10 online tongue  Jus sayin'

Did you try just formatting it in-camera?  I had a disk error a long time ago so I tapped format and it fixed it.

I'm sorry you're having that problem! I hope RollsUp & Will's suggestions do the trick.

I'm with Will -- I use cheapos. I bought a few online at one time and also bought a pack on sale at Staples. I think most of mine are Kingston. I've never had a problem with them. I'm not saying they're better because their cheap, just that it would suck a little less if you hadn't spent as much money on it.

Yes, that's my flickr, but most of my photos are on Picasa: http://picasaweb.google.com/superdewa

I've been using A-Data SDHC Memory Cards (I think Will recommended them on an old PJJ thread) and I've had no problems.  A-Data 16 GB SDHC Class 6 was only $28.05 from SupermediaStore.com. in October 2009.  Supermedia price has gone up to $35.99 (free S/H); Amazon $33.46 (free S/H).  I also have two A-Data SDHC 8GB cards which I've used for some time.  I like the large capacity cards because I shoot in RAW+JPEG Fine, which uses up a lot of memory.

Hope the other suggestions help you with the SanDisk card problem.

Edit:  Just realized all that info on SDHC cards is no help, because you're using a CF.  Amazon does have the SanDisk Ultra II 4G CF for $20+ $2 S/H from e-tech.

Right now it's about $10 for a 4gb, $15 for an 8gb.  I also didn't notice he was using CF, but Newegg has those 4GB for $13 plus shipping. I usually make sure to buy things like SD cards when I'm buying other stuff to save on shipping.

And Super, Kingston actually isn't a really cheapo company.  They're pretty good quality.  A-Data on the other hand is kind of cheapo.  I realized today my 8gb A-data card is starting to come apart.  It still works fine, but I can't switch it out too often or store it anywhere where it'll get banged around.  Kind of sad, but not exactly a big deal.  I take my cards in/out of devices a lot and they suffer a lot of wear and tear.

Marley, I'm surprised at a Sandisk being bad, I've used them for years in photography and other work, and they've always been great - in fact, one of the few memory manufacturers I've never had a bad card from.
That said, I guess even the best companies occasionally make a duff unit.
Did you format it before you started shooting?

There's a possibility you might have a fake card; there were a lot in circulation a couple of years ago.

You might want to drop sandisk an email and see what they have to say. If it's a genuine one, I'm sure they'd replace it immediately.

Wait a minute! Your supposed to format them? No. I've always just started used them  right out of the pkg. Haven't run into a problem ever. I'll need to look into seeing how I format these cards for my Canon Rebel XT. Learned something new today. Thanks Ben!

Formatting should be something like this: [menu]--> tools 2 (2nd yellow tab)-->Format-->[set]-->YES-->[set]

Done!

You should format every time you download/clear the card. Not doing so is asking for a bitten backside at a time when you least expect it!

Mr. Ben-S! I just wanted to say "YOU ARE THE MAN!" I formatted my Compact in my camera as you instructed and it works perfectly now! Thank you for the tip. I had no idea this needed to be done. No one at the store told me this and it's not on any of the packaging. Who'd of thought?? I'm adding 121 photos to my library with it as I type this.

Again everyone - - thanks for all of your help with this. Now I have 2 4GB and 1 1GB CompactFlash Disks that work!! Whoo Hoo!!
