Photo a Day Project - Please critique my work

I'm doing a photo a day project in an attempt to improve my photography skills.  I would love any comments  you might have.  The set is at http://www.flickr.com/photos/photonic/s … 49136952/.

Thank you for your time.

Photonic, I don't seem to have the option to comment on your photos. Do you have some setting turned off?

Yes, that's my flickr, but most of my photos are on Picasa: http://picasaweb.google.com/superdewa

photonic; You've got some shots in there that really show your eye off, but are let down by camera shake.
From what you've posted so far, the single thing that would most improve your shots is a tripod or some other support.

Photonic - I agree with Ben-s. You do have a really good eye. I'm really intrigued by the abstract patterns you've captured.

Only composition suggestion I have is for the picture of the cathedral (which is nice and sharp, btw) - it's not centered, but not far off center enough to make it look deliberate.

I took a look at your EXIF data - you're shooting at pretty slow shutter speeds - which is not helping with the camera shake at all. Not familiar with your camera - can you change the ISO when you're in low light? If not, definitely find something to prop your camera on.

Now, if only I'd practice what I say.... smile

Thank you for the comments.  They are very much appreciated.

I have a tripod, but it is so big that I rarely have it with me.  I ordered a Gorillapod, so hopefully I will be able to carry that with me.

Karol, I tend to keep my ISO low so I don't get a bunch of noise.  I really should try photographing at higher speeds to see just how objectionable the noise is.

Haven't had time To look at your photos, but did have some advice for you. Wh en I first started here I did the same thing--asked for critiques. It is hard sometimes to take criticism. Be assured that everyone here is sincere in wanting to help you improve. I have learned a tremendous amount from this bunch and I am sure you will, as well.

I agree with the others. I think you have a really good eye for composition and for finding interest where one might not expect it. I like that you get in close.

Higher shutter speed, higher ISO, and judicious use of flash could all help with the blur in lower-light situations.

What setting are you using on your camera?

If you're interested, here are a few articles on getting the most out of a point and shoot camera:

I really appreciate all the comments I'm getting, It's helping me develop a more critical eye.
I've started to shoot with a higher iso and it has worked better than I thought.  I'm getting noise in the shadows, but I'm learning to deal with it. Any suggestions for noise reduction?

Superd, thanks for the links. I will check them out.

My suggestion would be only to use it when it's needed (in lower light without a flash) or possibly use a lower ISO and use your flash to help. You can usually lower the power of your flash and you can also use things like wax paper to diffuse the flash, which helps the flash look better.

You can download a free standalone copy of Noiseware from Imagenomic at http://www.imagenomic.com/download_nwsa.aspx (the "community edition"). I have the photoshop plugin, and I don't think I could live without it at this point!
