Where should we go for help?

Hi,

Recently  found Photojojo and am impressed with the amount of knowledge and info found here.

I work for a company that creates DVD slideshows and edited movies for consumers and professionals.  We are re-vamping our site and product offerings.  Before doing so, we want to gather info about the general public's camera and photo habits and what they do with their media.  We are also trying to learn more about the wedding photography industry.

We've created a short survey for each group and have had some luck finding wedding photographer website to ask for help.

Does anyone have any suggestions where we could engage photography enthusiasts and try to get our survey answered?  We still need more wedding pros to contact also.  Simple searches on the web have not been very successful so far.

Thanks for any advice and help.

Ask your former clients.  Asking strangers (like us!) is just spam, and former clients might be more hospitable to actually answering your survey.

As for finding wedding photographers,
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=wedding+photographer

But you better offer something to them if you're going to contact strangers.  Otherwise, like I said, you're just spam.

Well that is one NO vote.  That's why I'm asking.  By the way, we do offer a free custom DVD slideshow to survey participants.

I don't think you're spam. I think you asked politely, and I don't see your company's name anywhere, or a link. It's not easy to phrase a question like that without looking like spam.

I would have answered earlier, but I don't really know. I am not a professional and have only photographed one wedding. If I were in your shoes, I would look at this list: http://www.invesp.com/blog-rank/Photography and twitter, facebook, and otherwise network like hell to try to get contacts on the top sites and offer them something for putting something about you on their site.

I'd be glad to take the survey. Where is it?
(I'm not sure if I'm the target audience, but, I'm the public? Is it for wedding photographers only?)

Well, it's not a no vote entirely.  You asked who you should ask so I said who.

I don't think it's spam either, at least not yet.  Asking for advice to run your company is cool, but if you started posting about your survey itself then sure it'd be spam.  Just because it's polite doesn't mean it's not wanted, and while it's not exactly offensive as some of the spam I get in my e-mail it's still something that occupies space on a forum I visit.  Something that purely benefits your company.

I wasn't accusing you, I was just suggesting etiquette.

Anyway, it would also be different if you weren't a new user who hasn't contributed yet.  Your only post that isn't in this thread (about your company) is suggesting that a person order a custom DVD slideshow (hmm..)

I'm sure you're a nice person and this doesn't bother me a whole lot, but that doesn't mean I'll keep my opinions quiet.  Sometimes honesty is healthy.  The opinion does change a little since you're rewarding people who take the survey.  I know someone from a company sent me an e-mail to use one of my photos on this forum and I said sure because they offered their company's services in return.. although he skipped out on his end of the deal.

Thanks for the feedback everybody.  Great link to photographer blogs.

Willtastic, keep your opinions coming.  I'm sure others feel the same way.  If I didn't want feedback I would have just posted the survey.

Would it be better to have people send their email to me if they are interested rather than posting?

If you check my other post I don't mention our company and said it can be done with software on your own.  I am really cognizant of not jumping in here and adding nothing other than promoting my own business.

I'd take the survey too (like scenes, though, I'm not sure I'm your target audience.) I'd prefer if you posted your link for the survey.

Couple other suggestions: not sure how much your willing to spend on getting to the right people - but you could check with some of the online survey/polling groups. They have regular panels they survey, and they may be able to target a survey based on profession and hobby.

Another idea is to search for associations related to photography.

Karol,  what do you mean by survey/polling groups?  Are you suggesting places like Harris Polling?  We have been looking at photography associations, any in particular you'd suggest?

Here are the surveys for those interested.

General public (put your email at the end for a code for a free DVD):

Wedding Photographers (enter email in outsourcing question for free DVD):

Thanks for your help.

Let me say pezboy007 that  offering a custom DVD slideshow to a pro wedding photographer is an insult. Think about it. They make these for a living. Thats part of their job. But if you want to find out,go to http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1014. You'll have to join the forum which is free, but there's a lot of them on there so ask them and see what they say but be prepared to be fired upon. Now there are some newbies that ask lots of questions BUT the veterans their are good and unlike many, they take their job very serious. But I believe thats what your looking for isn't it?

I'd strongly suggest contacting the operator of any website you're interested in polling - posting a survey straight directly is likely to incur the wrath of a moderator in pretty short order: Your post survived because you didn't just dive in with a link, which would usually be considered pretty blatant spamming.

One legitimate option is to purchase some ad space on sites such as this one, and put a link to your survey there.

Usseryrl, I don't understand why this is an insult.  We've been approached by some very high end pros.  Sure they can do this, but perhaps their time is better spent on other things.  There are still quite a few pros who don't provide slideshows.  Some people who know photos don't have expertise in the correct codecs, dvd authoring, etc.  I certainly value your opinion because I never imagined it would evoke such a response.

Ben-s, those are great suggestions that I'll explore.

Pezboy007. I think you have not quite understood the "flavour" of photojojo.  It would be a good idea for you to follow through on Ben's suggestion and chill out on the argumentative stance.

I actually think pezboy has been quite polite through this. Usseryl told him that what he was trying to offer is an insult, and Pezboy replied "I ... value your opinion." That sounds like peacemaking to me, but maybe I am missing something?

For what it's worth, I know wedding and portrait photographers who buy templates, actions, textures, blog-it boards, websites, etc. I think there may even already be some slideshow services out there that are popular. I haven't seen what pezboy is offering, but I assume it is along these lines. I don't see that it is an insult.

Yeah he doesn't need to chill out, we're all being pretty tame.

And I don't think even a completely set up pro would be insulted by a free DVD, although they might say "Yeah sure whatever."  Sort of like if someone offered me free photoshop work.. I'd kind of just giggle because I already know how to do most things.

I think often it's more about time than about whether you know how to do something. A lot of pros send their photos out to someone they trust to be processed, because they don't have the time themselves. That would include slide shows.

Ok to guys like me it's a good deal but as I understand your having sort of a hard time finnding pro wedding photographers.  Now a as you know, these guys {the real pros] get thousands of dollars for a wedding and most of them have degrees and can easily carry 20.000 dollars worth of equipment in a camera bag. Thats the real pros. And to them it's like someone telling them they don't know what their doing. And that is where I was coming from earlier.
Now some call themselves pros and go in with a rebel xt with on camera flash and nothing more, and charge very low fees, you know like a hundred dollars or so, and they simply give their clients a DVD with lousy photos. Now I believe you will have better luck in marketing your DVDs if you target amatures rather than pros.I'm sure many familys would love to have them for pictures they have taken at gatherings and stuff.Another thing that might help is offering to put videos cassette recordings on DVD. Also you might mention the S&H charges on your websight to anyone in the US. Perhaps a flat fee.
Just a thought. The way the economy is,It's still going to be a slow start, and nowdays everyone needs all the help they can get.
So if you will excuse me,I have to go give a chef a cookie.
Have a nice week.

Sorry if I have come across as argumentative or pushy, I'm really not trying to.  We really want to understand the pain points wedding photographers experience and see if we can offer a service of value.

Our assumptions are based on a few higher end ($3000 per wedding) clients who asked us to produce DVDs.  There is always a concern that just because a few people like a product or idea that it will translate into an actual business model.

FYI, we already do slideshows, edited movies, photo scanning, and video transfers for consumers.  We are going through the process of investigating a new product offering (wedding photographer slideshows) and trying to understand it first.

Engaging and getting feedback (we never would've thought about the issues usseryrl has brought up) is great for us.

And thanks usseryrl for taking the survey, we really appreciate.

Also thanks to the positive comments from everyone else.

I missed this one! If I would have been on when this was posted, I probably  would not have deleted it, but would have kept a close eye on it, first, because it is a first time poster and seemed "spammy," but was politely stated and did not contain a link--asked first.

Would like to see pezboy participate in the forum.
