Family Reunion Photography Ideas?
What do you find is the best way to take family reunion photos?
Candid? Posed? Group? Fun group (jumping, otherwise)?

Ply the adults with enough wine that they'll do anything.
I find the posed group photos so difficult in my family, but we try to take them anyway. Mostly I prefer candids or "can you guys look up at me and smile" photos.

Group photos are a pain (especially if there are young kids and/or surly teenagers involved,) but it sure is nice to get everyone in one shot.
I also like the idea of getting people to do silly things - help them loosen up for a shot or two.

I'll get a mixture of candid and posed. I like to try to get the posed shots just in case the candid shots don't result in a decent shot of the full face. But for me it's really all about the candid shots to capture the people enjoying themselves. There are enough family member's there posing people all day that I don't want to take people away from conversations. After all the point of the reunion is to get together and catch up - not stand there posing for pictures all day. 
My plan for the next reunion is to print off my old reunion shots and take them along - the point will be to try and recapture some of the posed shots in the past with the same people holding the old photo. I'm even going to try to find some really old family reunion pics that mom, dad, grandma, grandpa may have taken and try to re-shoot them.

Normally I would vote for the candid, but I must admit that having been dragged through the whole massive group photo thing I do still appreciate the resulting photo. It is my only photo of some of the more distant family that I have. My Mum has had to tell me who some of the people were. I think you need at least one group shot and to get that you need to pose everyone.

Recapture some of the posed shots of the past? That sounds cool.
I like group photos, though some of the old ones are hard to make out who's who, even on an 8 x 10. Ok, so I probably couldn't make out half the people in person, either. Last time, I took a main group photo, then zoomed in and went across the group to get a closer up version of people.
Candids are cool, too. I usually do more of that since I don't like to ask people to group together and/or don't know their names. I've started making photobooks of family get togethers, and tossing a few hundred photos in them with full pages of group photos or favorite candids. That way, some distant relatives 10th kid can be in the book, without me needing to get a 4 x 6 print of someone I don't know, too. (I get 4 x 6s of my favorite 25 or 50).
I want to get a smaller group together and ask people to jump or do something more fun than standing there, but I wouldn't want granny to break a hip. Maybe for the smaller groups of 10 or so the jumping thing might work. I like the "lay on the ground in a circle with the lawn as a backdrop," but I'm pretty sure no one would go for that.. and if they did, they'd never get up.

Ankou, that does sound like a lot of fun. Are you going to get really goofy and put adults in bathtub shots?
Scenes, I can't remember if it was here or somewhere else, but I remember a suggestion to have everyone stand behind the camera while the photographer sets the timer and then have them run to get in place by the time the camera shoots. Grandmas with bad hips can stay in their places the whole time.

Ankou, I like your ideas to tie together past and present reunions through the photos. I think taking the photos of the subjects holding their old photos from unusual angles can add to the fun as well.
There is actually something more painful than the group shot - video footage of the group shot. One way to make the group shot far less painful is to limit - I know I'm going to be unpopular for this suggestion - how many people can take the photo. Designate a few family photographers ahead of time and then limit the posed shots to their cameras. We live in the digital age, everyone can get copies later.
Superdewa, I like the suggestion to run into the shot after the timer has been set. Another option on my Nikon is to trigger the timer with an audio cue. You can have everyone shout the family name, or an in-joke, and it takes the photo. You get some interesting expressions this way. Not exactly your traditional posed shot.
As for candids, get each part of the family to take their own candids and then combine into one memento later. Then you know everyone is accounted for.

Superd, I did the run to your place thing for my family's portrait this year. It resulted in one of the most relaxed and fun poses I've seen. It captured the spirit and personality of my family very well, I recommend it highly.
You could also set up locations with a nice background and a p&s on a tripod, for people to do their own posed shots. I've had good luck with handing out disposables to people (kids especially!) and seeing what comes back.
Just some ideas.

Picasa web albums now has a feature where you can make group albums. Obviously you can create groups on flickr, too, but I personally think Picasa is simpler for people who aren't that comfortable with computers (they may need someone to download the program to their computer and show them what to do, but from then on, it's simple). This would be a great thing for candid shots at family gatherings. I'm going to suggest it at our next family event.
