How to get kids to smile?

Using a modified pez dispenser mounted atop your camera is a fun idea to get a giggle from little kids. (http://photojojo.com/content/tips/get-k … -a-picture)

What other ideas have you used to get kids (young and old) to give you a grin?

My favorite line is: "Growl like a tiger!" Adults and kids alike respond in one of two ways:
A) The do their best tiger impression, or
B) They laugh like crazy people.
Either way, it works like a charm.

LOVE the PEZ idea, my son has decided he hates the camera at the moment after being so photogenic for 2 years, so I'm off to get on tomorrow wink

When photographing children, I always have a bottle of bubbles on hand.  An assistant helps or a small bubble machine, but I've done it by myself too.  You get some spontaneous reactions in little ones which makes for good photos. It takes their mind off the camera too.

Depending on the age, the traditional peekaboo sometimes works.

For my son I throw tennis balls back and forth with him and make funny noises when I throw it! It's a bit tricky to hold my camera sometimes but you know, we'll do anything for a picture! I used to lie to him outside and say there was an airplane above me. He doesn't fall for it anymore!

Ask them to tell you their favorite jokes - they usually crack themselves up!

Farts always work for me.
Er, the fart noises I make with my mouth that is.
Even the most sour of faces will buckle under a fart version of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star".

I've obviously shown myself to be the classiest one here ;P

Stuffed animals work well for little ones.  Also, my friend's son cracked up when we showed him the TMX ELMO.

No I agree farts are good Stephanie : )  If they are old enough to talk some I ask them to tell me about what their most favorite thing is, you get smiles and all sorts of other expressions too!

I tell children NOT to smile under any circumstances. I tell them this is a VERY SERIOUS photograph and that smiling or laughing will ruin it.

For older babies and toddlers I swear this always works.   Everyone in the room has to be in on it though.   First, give the baby a set of keys and encourage them to throw them.  Once they do, everyone claps and cheers as if they have done something awsome.  They will smile and laugh.  Do this three of four times and then on cue everyone is to not clap for two times (you won't get picts at this moment).  Then then next time everyone goes back to cheering and clapping.   This is when you get the best smiles out of them.

Heaven help me, I use the old bit of calling the kid some name that is a) hideous and b) not theirs. And then keep doing it. Or ask them if they're driving yet. Yeah, I'm a hoot.

Anything that is unexpected or something an adult "shouldn't do" (e.g. lettin' the gas go) tends to engage the young 'uns and get them smiling.

You are on your own with teenagers. Surly things they are.
