a camera like the canon s30?
i used the canon powershot s30 on a daily basis since i bought it 3ish years ago. it just died. they made a few subsequent models (up to the s80), but recently discontinued the line. and so i've no clue what camera to buy now. i haven't loved any of the other canon point-and-shoots that i've tried -- mostly because of the shutter delay. the s30 had almost no shutter delay, and it could be fully manual or fully automatic or lots of things in between.
so, i'm looking for advice. is there a canon point-and-shoot that you love? did you use a camera in the powershot s line and now know of others that are comparable?
it doesn't have to be a canon, but i shoot most things with a canon 30d and used the s30 because i could carry it on me at all times and because it was so great, so i'm used to how they work
thanks.

Sorry to hear about your S30 giving up. I've used the S40, and it struck me as very good. There are a few cameras in the current range of a similar level to the Sxx series; The S3 IS, S5 IS - both 12x zoom, "bridge" cameras, of 6 and 8 megapixels, respectively. The G7 is probably more what you're after, it's more compact and tough, with a 6x image stabilised zoom, and a 10MP sensor, along with a high level of manual control.
None of the current range are anything like the shape of your S30, being more square than rectangular. I understand where you are coming from with wanting a Canon, I love them myself.
I use a Ricoh GR Digital as a "carry round" camera - it's very small and light, but very tough, with a metal case. Image quality is pretty good up to ISO 400, after that it starts to get a tad noisy, but is generally OK. The GR Digital is stuffed to the gills with manual controls and extra features - 2 control wheels, manual focus rocker, hotshoe, accessory bayonet on the lens, built in intervalometer. etc etc... The only thing you may not like is the prime lens. It will come as a culture shock if you are used to zooming a lot. One fantastic feature it has is the ability to use AAA batteries in place of the battery pack, so you can usually get yourself out of a mess with it.
One other camera I can definitely recommend is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2. It's fairly slim, is a mainly metal case, and has an image stabilised Leica lens. Worth a look.
Hope this helps.

I also have the S30 (about 6 years old now). Its still working good, but it's on its third battery set (I like to keep 2 batteries around). What I''ve noticed when the battery starts failing is that the camera might work, but fails to write to the CF card correctly, sometimes corrupting the file structure in the process.
The second set were really cheap batteries (Digital Life), and were usable for about a week before they too died. The third set were quality batteries, and the camera is operating flawlessly (long enough that one of my two 128MB flash cards died - replaced them both with a single 1GB card).
The moral of the story - The camera may still be perfectly functional. It's the stuff around it that fails.
I also have a friend with an S40, but she bashed in the LCD display on the back. Otherwise her camera seemed to work OK (but she's somewhat challenged operating her camera.) I'd like to have her camera to mount it on the end of 900mm f/8.0 Newtonian telescope...

It's a cool camera and all I can see why the price is what it is. I'm just.. a teenager.
EDIT: I also want a Sigma DP1. Like, really, really bad.

I'm not convinced by the DP1. I had a play with one a few weeks ago, and it didn't strike me as particularly fantastic. The image quality was not really much better than the G9 or the GRD, and some things looked distinctly unsharp.

Oh really? Well, I'm sure I'd research it more and read some reviews before actually dropping any money, but I just haven't bothered since it's not viewed as a possibility right now.
Pity though, from the spin Sigma put out it seemed like it had a lot of opportunity to shine.

It could have been brilliant, but it turned out to be a bit lacking IMHO
