Tripods n Stuff

Hey everyone!
So I'll be leaving for the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona, Leupp, on friday and I need to get a tripod before then!
I don't know much at all about tripods but I do know that I don't have much money, hahaha.
So I was just wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions of tripods I could consider buying. Also, I shoot with a Canon 400D(XTi).  Thanks a lot!

Oh, and also, what's your preference on memory cards, Compact Flash more specifically.  I currently have a Sandisk Ultra II 2gb but I want to get a 4gb also. I saw this one 4gb that was cheaper than the Sandisk Ultra II, it was by the brand name Trascend. Anyone know anything about that brand? And what differs between different brands of memory cards, what should I look out for?

i have 2 gorilla pod's.  the point and shoot size, and the SLR size.  these arent conventional tripode by any means, but work REALLY well in every situation where i have needed a tripod.  i was in the market for a tripod, came across these and they have worked nicely.

here is a link on amazon:

as far as memory cards go, i have had great luck with the lesser known brands, only noticing a difference on the write/read speeds (how long it takes to transfer photos/whatever off the card), YMMV, but i usually just grab whats cheapest because i just shoot for recreation.

Photojojo has gorilla pods in their store above, as well!

I wish I knew more about memory cards; you might want to start a thread, charliesuh, just on them.

For a tripod I use a Velbon Ultra Maxi SF.  Small when folded down, and very light.  Great to carry anywhere.

Memory cards...  They say there are only 2 companies that make them.  However the off brnads I have used tend to be slow and crash over time.  To me, it seems like you get what you pay for!

Don't buy a cheap tripod. Well, not unless it's an emergency...
I went through 3 of them in about 18 months, until I saw sense and shelled out for a Manfrotto.
The cheap lightweight ones flex very badly, and make long lens or macro work Reeeeeally hard.
You frame up, lock the head off, and as soon as you let go, the tripod moves - and you've lost your framing.

I bought a Manfrotto 055CL with a 141RC head. It's rather heavy, but rock solid. I originally got it for my 300D (with battery grip), which is a little bigger than your 400D.

If you don't want to go for a Manfrotto (they are fairly expensive), I would be inclined to look at the Calumet 7100, part number CK7114.
It's under £50, but looks pretty sturdy, and has a 3 way head (like mine)

Alright, so I totally didn't take anyone's advice and I went and bought a cheap tripod, hahaha. I usually always buy my photo-related gear online but this morning i found a nice little camera shop near my house. I went and checked it out and the people there were really nice. I ended up buying a cheap 29$ tripod, it's a Sunpak 66oi UT or something. I don't expect it to last me forever, so it's good enough for me.

Also, they had Gorillapods! So I got to actually play around with one before choosing to buy it, which I did. I got the Gorillapod SLR Zoom version, the largest one for only 35$! Great price if you ask me! Hehe. It was my first time ever going to an actual camera store and I had fun, I think ill be going there more often!

And as for the memory, I bought a Sandisk Ultra II 4GB CF card from newegg.com for about 60$. That's a pretty alright deal as well.

Hopefully 6GB of memory will last me 2 weeks! I wont have a laptop or computer with me, and I tend to shoot a lot! I can't wait to leave! I'll be sure to post photos from the trip when I get back!

Hehehe, I'll be shooting in JPEG
I don't really ever shoot in RAW, I don't think I'm professional enough to really understand and utilize the advantages RAW has. So for me and my use, its just bigger file sizes

HI
That cheap tripod might not be the best but it will work - one tip, if it is unstable in any way - camera tilting or wind - put your camera bag on the center post and the added weight will stablilze the tripod a little more.
also get a level so you can level your horizons! mine are often wonky!

have fun
