pricing your photos

If someone sees one of your photographs online and is interested in purchasing it, how do you decide how to price it?

What do you think is reasonable for an 8x10" or an 11x14" print?

I sell my 8x10s for $45, usually, unmatted and unframed.  I can print up to that size at home on my Canon ip6600, or go to Sam's and get them for $1.50, so I'm okay at that price.  I use Ilford Gallerie paper that costs me around .25 a sheet.

I did sell a 16x20 to a guy out of town for $45, but I wanted a really nice print so I paid $15 at a local lab, and then $5 for the tubes and 5 or so to ship and I still thought I was doing okay.  BUT, my buyer said the tube was crushed and I had to re-print, tube, and mail.  I made nothing but he sent me a nice cigar, so it was a wash.

Plan for every screw up that can occur and you'll be okay.

Youngna,

Do you think most of the people who contact you are of the starving artist type, people who are buy art regularly, or people buying art for the first time?

Given that the unit cost is negligible on a print, it's probably more about perceived value and what people are able to pay.

Can I be any less helpful? smile

It can also depend on how skilled you are as a photographer and the quality of the work. I'm in college and use photography as a side job, but for an 8x10, I just charge $5.00, since the printing agency I use isn't that expensive, and I want my customers to come back for more type of photos at reasonable prices.
