Digital/Film combo cameras?

I know I could probably google this, but why not ask on the Photojojo forum?!?  My friend is interested in buying a "good" digital camera, but would ideally want a combination digital and film camera.  Do these exist?  If so, what is the price range, and do you have any recommendations?

As far as I know, the only kinds of cameras that shoot both film and digital are high-end, professional studio cameras, for example Hasselblad makes digital backs for their V-series cameras, and digital backs are available for large-format cameras.

Any of these will set you back something in the range of tens of thousands of dollars. They will also be much larger and heavier than a 35mm film camera and a DSLR combined.

There is the Leica R9 with the digital-modul-r...
This is a Leica R series 35mm SLR, with a digital back.
Very expensive though...

The only other options I can think of are the Hasselblad and Mamiya medium format units, or go waaay back to the Canon EOS 1n with a Kodak DCS back (6MP, IIRC)
All of these options are awkward, expensive and rather heavy :p

I think the best compromise is what I do, - get both film and digital bodies in the same range, so you can use the same lenses.

Ah, good to know, thanks!  Yeah, I have a film Canon Rebel and now my Canon XTI digital...but sadly, I never use the film one, even though I was slow to make that transition.

I have mounted an aiptek digital video/still camera on a bracket with my super 8mm camera so I could shoot both film and video simultaneously.   I am thinking of using the digital camera with my SLR too.

Interesting. I would love to find a digital/film combo that actually functions well and isn't insanely pricey. Anything been made along these lines in recent history?

Wow, really raising a thread from the dead.  No, Scenes, I haven't heard of any film/digital combos come out.

And sadly we're probably not going to see one soon. Only pro's seem to NEED to shoot both film and digital with one camera so I doubt any inexpensive cameras will be designed. I noticed Leica's new digital Med Format SLR is digital only. Leica has or will shortly discontinue the R9 camera that Ben mentioned. You might be able to find an R9 used but it and the lenses wont be cheap. It's Manual Focus only BTW but the viewfinder is much better than anything you're likely to have seen.

The only options still made are medium format bodies with interchangeable backs.
All of them are insanely expensive.

Guess it makes sense for it to be pro-only. I can't imagine most consumers wanting digital and something like 35mm photos at once. Well, I would,... but most people probably wouldn't find it cool.
