Do you always friend back on Flickr? I do. I figure if someone wants to make me a contact to check out my photos, it's rude not to make them a contact too. And I usually check out their photos, and click into their website if they have one.
But I know some are a lot more restrictive about who they'll connect to, and I'm curious to see where people stand and why.
(I only friend people I know on LinkedIn and Facebook, but I'm not sure why...)

I try to always add people back as contacts who added me as contacts
I only add people I know on facebook but will add anyone on myspace, hehe.. funny how that works and we're more restrictive on certain sites

I'm not on flickr, for mass photo sharing (like a recent rally cross I did) I use photobucket, but then I'm only trying to share those with the guy I shot. For my good shots or my "hey look at me gallery" I use Deviantart... Unfortunately like most sites there are a bunch of kids running around. (I may have to check out flickr) but I don't friend everyone who friends me on DA, and I've even left some people in my friends list and stopped getting notices of their new works because I got tired of the mass photos that really weren't any good. (I sound like such a snob, but I don't have time to look at stuff I don't like) I do however always check out anyone's gallery who has either commented of friended me. At least until I'm getting 1000s of comments a day, and I don't think that'll happen.

I used to always friend back, but then I ended up with so many strangers' photos in my Contacts' Photos area, that it would take me a while to sort through to see what my friends were doing. Recently, I started removing contacts I didn't personally know, except for this one guy who scouts locations, a lot of which are in New York and are amazingly photographed.
I guess I use flickr much like I use facebook or myspace: to interact and keep up with my friends. I use flickr groups to branch out and see other people's photos.

I friend back for much the same reasons Amit notes in his post. I like when people take the trouble to make me a contact - I like to spread the love!

If someone makes me a contact, I usually check out the contact's profile & photos first. Most of the time I make them a contact too, but there have been a few times when the photo content is just not of any interest or may have some agenda I'm not in to. I usually make contacts friends after I 'get to know them, their photos' & find our common interests. It's hard not to add contacts when there are so many fabulous photographers on flickr. I have some great friends on flickr! Peace.

I always add as contact back. I also add as contact everyone I've faved pics from six or more times (a greasemonkey script tracks that for me). That way, most of my contacts have proven records of stuff I like, and my recent contact's photos page usually has some good stuff.
I do try and reserve the actual "friend" level for people I actually know. I've only got one friend I don't actually know, and that's only because his best pics are friends-only.

Sometimes I'll contact back just so the people get the little email that says "yay!" and won't feel rejected. Then a day or so later I remove them as contacts. they don't get notified as far as I know, so no one is the wiser and I keep my contacts from getting to an unwieldy number.

Very smart Ingrid! That's pretty sneaky...I asked someone first if they'd get a notification that they've been removed, and after realizing they didn't, I went ahead and cleaned up my contacts list too.

if someone adds me as a contact, i like to browse their photos, website, etc., and i'll usually add them as a contact in return if i like their work. otherwise, i'll send them a message asking what they liked of my work and if they have any general comments.

I add them back if I know them and/or if their flickr photo stream contains photos I find interesting.

I always check out their work (and favs, profiles, etc) and add comments/favs when inspired. I generally 'friend' people only when I like a majority of their stream. Otherwise I feel I'm kinda short-changing the contacts I've had for awhile because there's no way I can dedicate my attention to 300+ people.
When I have some down time, I will go back again and check up on the streams of the people who've added me. Just because I don't add them back doesn't mean I don't watch them. It just means I like having a manageable contacts page

Not too many "friending" going on for me thus far. Admittedly, I am pretty new to flickr...
In principle, I have no problem friending back, after all, I think one of the main goals of this type of website is to create community amongst its members. On the other hand, maybe more community is done through groups than by having two users marked as "friends".
Arguably, been a friend is sort of "bookmarking" this person or its creativity or its nice flower pictures; so maybe not friending back just means the person shows interest in other things than the ones you have an interest in.
So I move that everyone in this post checks out each other's pages or blogs...maybe then, we could friend back?

I will pretty much always add someone, unless they have no photos on their flickr or something along those lines. I don't have too many contacts right now, and I know a lot of people have TONS, so my opinion might change if I find I magically one day have over 100 contacts. But the thing I enjoy about flickr the most is that the quality of photographer on this site is much better than photobucket. I'm not saying everyone who uploads on flick is a pro, but I've been pleasantly pleased.

I'll friend them back most likely. Even if they only have a few photos or their photos aren't exactly my style/taste. I like to look at as many different photos as I can so I can try to see what the person was taking a picture of at the time, how they decided to frame the shot, etc. I think it helps me grow as a photographer.

Always on Flickr, only if I know them on Facebook and I gave up on Myspace. I figure that the more mutual contacts you have, the more likely they are you comment you and favorite your pictures. Then you do it back and everyone is happy. yay!
